Safeway Pulls Gel Candy Linked to Child Deaths

Grocery giant Safeway pulled a popular candy from its 200 stores in Northern California after the gel-filled cups were linked to the deaths of two children in the state.
The Santa Clara County Department of Public Health was expected to issue a rare “alert to parents” warning about the candy and advising them to cut the cups up before letting kids have them.
The sweet snacks contain a kind of jelly that does not readily dissolve in the mouth. Often, the gel surrounds a piece of fruit.
Most of the candy removed from Safeway’s shelves was sold under the Jelly Yum brand name.
