From Times Wire Reports
Successive crop failures have left 1 million people in Tajikistan in urgent need of food aid, the International Red Cross said.
Two years of drought have led to a shortfall of grain, the agency said. A dilapidated irrigation system has exacerbated the problem.
A food shortage last year forced some Tajiks to sell whatever they could to buy food--including the doors, windows and roofs of their houses. The agency is appealing for $4 million to provide people with food as well as winter shoes and clothing for 65,000 schoolchildren.
