State Probes Alleged Children’s Shelter Abuses

The state is investigating allegations that a shelter for abused and neglected children deprived its charges of food, baited them to fight and locked them outside in the cold.
The accusations against Mary Graham Children’s Shelter are based on a complaint received by the San Joaquin County Juvenile Justice Commission.
Media reports said Tuesday that the complaint detailed accusations of staffers isolating children in empty rooms without food or water, and locking children outside the shelter in their pajamas on a cold, windy night.
Suzanne Schenk, shelter director, said the author of the complaint is “obviously a previous, disgruntled employee.” The shelter has a provisional license and is seeking a permanent license.
