MOORPARK — A 9-year-old Moorpark girl running from an ice cream truck Friday afternoon was critically injured when she darted into traffic lanes and hit the side of a passing vehicle.
The girl, whom police say they couldn’t identify, suffered serious head injuries in the 3:25 p.m. accident and was described as being in critical condition. She was taken to Simi Valley Hospital but airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles late Friday, authorities said.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Ed Tumbleson said the girl’s parents had just purchased ice cream from the truck, parked near the corner of Butter Creek Road and Poppyglen Court, when she unexpectedly ran into traffic lanes.
She hit the right side of a pickup truck driven by Camarillo resident Eliseo Perez, 37, who was heading north on Butter Creek Road.
Tumbleson said authorities were investigating whether she struck her head after falling.
The girl was taken to Los Angeles because Simi Valley Hospital does not have a pediatric unit, a spokeswoman said.
