Ventura College is top-seeded in the women’s basketball Southern California playoffs that start Friday.
The defending state champion Pirates (28-4) have a bye until the second round on Tuesday, when they will host the winner of the first-round game between Palomar (16-10) and Chaffey (20-15).
No. 3-seeded Canyons (25-6) also has a bye until Tuesday, when it will host the winner of the Santa Barbara (18-9)-Victor Valley (18-13) first-round game.
An intriguing matchup pits No. 23 Antelope Valley (19-14) at No. 10 Valley (22-12) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Coach John Taylor, in his first season at Antelope Valley, headed the Valley program for seven seasons.
No. 20 Glendale (17-13) travels to No. 13 San Bernardino Valley (26-8) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
In the men’s playoffs, Moorpark (22-5) is seeded No. 3, the highest of any team in the region.
The Raiders (22-5) host No. 30 Grossmont (17-12) in a first-round game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
In other first-round games Saturday at 7 p.m., No. 25 Cerritos (14-16) is at No. 8 Glendale (20-10) and No. 26 Cypress (13-17) plays at No. 7 Ventura (22-8). Valley (21-11), seeded No. 6, hosts No. 27 Pasadena City (12-19) at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, No. 23 Antelope Valley (16-15) plays at No. 10 Long Beach City (19-12).
Four men’s and four women’s teams from the South advance to the state championships March 8-10 at Stockton.
