Rancho Alamitos Defeats La Quinta in Wrestling

Thanh Phan’s pin at 119 pounds was a key win that helped Rancho Alamitos to a 50-30 victory over visiting La Quinta in a Garden Grove League wrestling meet Thursday night.
Phan’s win, which came in 3 minutes 12 seconds, followed La Quinta’s two wins in the opening rounds of the dual meet.
Zeke Rodriguez scored the fastest pin for Rancho Alamitos (13-9, 1-0), winning his match at 215 pounds in 18 seconds.
In another Garden Grove League meet:
Santiago 84, Bolsa Grande 0--Of the 14 matches contested, the Cavaliers won 11 by forfeit and three by pin. Tommy Vu, at 119 pounds, scored the fastest pin in 29 seconds. Santiago is 3-7, 1-0.
In the first round of the Western girls’ water polo tournament:
El Modena 7, Covina Charter Oak 5--Vanessa Lara scored both of her goals in the fourth quarter and Kristin Taylor also scored two goals for El Modena (4-5).
Los Alamitos 13, Mater Dei 1--Drue Wawrzynski had seven goals for Los Alamitos (6-5), which will play El Modena today in the second round at Valencia High.
Huntington Beach 9, Morro Bay 2--Audrey Elo had three goals and five steals and Jessica Fleener had two goals for Huntington Beach (5-5), which plays La Crescenta Crescenta Valley in the second round today at Kennedy High.
Savanna 4, Aliso Niguel 3--Andrea Barraza scored three goals and Sharece Mathews had one for host Savanna (7-3), which advanced to play Whittier California.
Sonora 8, Valencia 1--Samantha Arnold and Courtney Robertson each scored three goals at Valencia High for Sonora (8-6), which advanced to play South Pasadena.
Troy 3, Redondo Union 2--Freshman Nikki Carreon scored after a steal with 1:10 remaining to break a 2-2 tie for Troy (11-3) at Savanna High. Troy will play Laguna Hills, a 13-2 winner over Westlake Village Westlake, in the next round.
Santa Ana Valley 9, Oxnard Rio Mesa 3--Ana Avila, Ana Martinez and Angie Araujo had two goals each for Santa Ana Valley (9-3), which plays Western next.
Western 12, Loara 2--Lindsay Brown had five goals and Alie Hower had three for host Western.
In nonleague water polo:
No. 10 El Toro 10, Villa Park 5--Ke’ala Carter scored three goals to lead El Toro (7-1). Katie Hedley and Nicole Sonnenfeld scored two goals each for El Toro.
Cara Colton had three goals and five saves for Villa Park (7-8).
