Firefighters fighting a blaze that has scorched 700 acres of wild land had the wildfire hemmed in and under control around 8 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.
Residents of homes and a youth correctional camp nearby were allowed to return Wednesday night after being evacuated just hours earlier, said Kimberly Lanier, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry.
Highway 243 reopened Thursday night, Lanier said.
Firefighters expected to have the fire out this morning, Lanier said. Damage is estimated to be $400,000.
