Crews Douse Home Fire; Nearby Houses Spared

A fire roared through the attic and garage of a Thousand Oaks home Friday, causing $175,000 in damage while firefighters struggled to keep it from spreading to houses nearby.
A neighbor reported smoke coming from the attic of the home in the 100 block of Summerfield Street about 2:15 p.m.
Thirty-five firefighters extinguished the blaze by 3:05 p.m. County fire spokeswoman Sandi Wells said several nearby houses with wooden roofs were threatened by the blaze. One nearby roof briefly ignited, but those flames were quickly extinguished.
Live rifle ammunition and fireworks in the garage of the home popped off during the fire, Wells said.
A neighbor broke the window and rescued a German shepherd and a cockatiel.
Well said fast work by the firefighters kept the blaze from spreading throughout the residential neighborhood.
No one was home when the fire broke out, and officials said that the cause is still under investigation.
