Leaders Renew Bid to Save N. Ireland Pact

WESTON-UNDER-LIZARD, England — The British and Irish governments renewed efforts Friday to preserve Northern Ireland’s peace accord, a day after intense clashes between militant Roman Catholics and riot police in Belfast.
Britain flew leaders of five Northern Irish parties from Belfast, the provincial capital, to a secluded mansion in this village in central England for talks.
The talks are aimed at protecting the Catholic-Protestant coalition governing Northern Ireland. Protestants are threatening to scuttle the government unless the Irish Republican Army starts to disarm.
