Fast Start Is Key in Giant Victory

SEATTLE — Russ Ortiz pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, and Barry Bonds hit an RBI single in the first inning as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-3, on Friday night.

Ortiz (10-5), who won for the third time in four decisions, gave up three runs and seven hits, walked one and struck out a season-high nine to help the Giants end a three-game losing streak.

Ortiz was taken out in the eighth after giving up a home run to Edgar Martinez.

Robb Nen struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save in 32 opportunities.

Bonds, who hit his major league-leading 40th home run in Thursday night’s 11-inning loss, gave San Francisco a 1-0 lead in the first after Calvin Murray hit a leadoff double.

Pedro Feliz’s sacrifice fly in the second put the Giants ahead, 2-0, against Jamie Moyer (9-5), who lost for the fourth time in five decisions.

San Francisco, which improved to 8-3 in interleague play this season, took a 5-1 lead with three runs in the fourth. Ramon Martinez and Feliz had RBI singles, and Rich Aurilia added a sacrifice fly, but saw his second 13-game hitting streak of the season end. Two of the runs were unearned because of a throwing error by third baseman David Bell and a fielding error by left fielder Mark McLemore.

Carlos Guillen singled in a run in the third and John Olerud led off the fourth with his 12th homer for the Mariners.

Moyer gave up five runs--three earned--and 10 hits in six innings.

Ortiz gave up his fourth and fifth homers of the season, his first since May 2 at Pittsburgh.

Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki went hitless, but stole his 29th base, tied for the major league lead with the Philadelphia Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins.

Bell, whose ninth-inning homer off Nen sent Thursday night’s game into extra innings, was ejected by plate umpire Rob Drake in the seventh.
