Boeing’s Kansas Move Displaces Engineers

Boeing Co. will move engineering work on its 757 narrow-body jet fuselage to Wichita, Kan., from Renton, Wash., leaving more than 80 employees to look for new jobs, the company said.
The workers are among 500 that Boeing said would be displaced when it announced in March that 757 fuselage production will move to Wichita.
The move will be completed by late 2002, in line with the production shift to Wichita, where Boeing already produces the 737 narrow-body fuselage.
Boeing also said 1,000 design engineers who now work at several sites in the Seattle area will be assigned to a single location at its Everett, Wash., wide-body jet plant.
Boeing told employees it would try to find new jobs for the 80 displaced engineers and their support staff.
Boeing is moving its headquarters to Chicago next month, trimming about 500 of the current 1,000 corporate jobs at its Seattle base.
