U.S. Serviceman Missing After Fleeing Rebel Fire

Philippine police and soldiers and U.S. military staff were searching for a missing U.S. serviceman who fled when he and four other American military personnel encountered gunfire from suspected Communist guerrillas on the slopes of Mt. Pinatubo.
The Americans on the volcano were accompanied by Philippine soldiers and a guide at the northern tourist site, said Elmer Cato, a spokesman for U.S.-Philippine military exercises.
The rest of the personnel were unhurt in the incident, which Cato said was probably not related to kidnappings in the southern Philippines involving Muslim rebels.
