Mars is closer and brighter this week than any time since 1988. It shines as the brilliant orange “star” low in the southeast after 9 p.m. an due south at midnight. Through a small telescope, Mars looks like an orange BB, but good amateur telescopes show its major surface features. Mars remains bright in the sky through the summer.
