Wife Thought Hanssen Was Writing to Woman

The wife of accused spy Robert Philip Hanssen believed his furtive activity in the basement of their home two decades ago involved writing to another woman, a source close to the case said.
Bonnie Hanssen told the FBI, shortly after her husband’s arrest in February on charges of spying for Moscow, that she had become suspicious of his activities in 1979 or 1980, the source said.
When she confronted him, Hanssen apparently said he was trying to dupe the Soviets by passing along useless information, the source said.
Hanssen has pleaded not guilty to espionage charges.
