4 TODAY LA MIRADA HIGH
Brea Olinda Coach Matt Swindle played on the Wildcats’ last section title team in 1986. The fourth-seeded Wildcats reached the final by stunning top-seeded and previously undefeated La Verne Bonita in the semifinals, 1-0, in overtime. Swindle said he has had more talented teams during his eight years at Brea, but none scrappier. Mike Maynard has keyed Brea’s run to the finals, coming up with spectacular saves in the 1-0 victory over Cathedral City and the overtime thriller over Bonita. Defensive-oriented Santa Barbara, led by UCLA-bound Aaron Lopez at sweeper, has lost only to Claremont, a Division I quarterfinalist. The Dons beat four-time Division III champion Santa Margarita on penalty kicks in the semifinals.
