Perkins Moving to Costa Mesa

Dave Perkins, who coached varsity football at Estancia High for the last three seasons, has taken over the program at rival Costa Mesa.

Perkins, who compiled a 14-19 record at Estancia, will take six members of his coaching staff--all walk-on coaches--with him.

“It’s a good move,” Perkins said. “It’s not a lateral move as far as commitment to the program by the administration, the number of kids out for the program or the overall athletic atmosphere.”

Several former coaches, including Activities Director Art Perry and teacher John Liebengood, have replaced Perkins at Estancia’s practices this spring.

“We want to make sure we have plenty of help and that football is going to build its program,” said Estancia Athletic Director Tim Parsel.

Perkins replaces Jerry Howell, who resigned after six seasons with a 41-24 record. Perkins will finish the school year at Estancia and begin teaching at Costa Mesa in the fall.

Estancia was 7-4 last season, sharing second place in the Pacific Coast League and losing in the first round of the Division VIII playoffs. Costa Mesa was 6-4 overall and finished fourth in league, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

* Harold Eggers has resigned as Ocean View’s football coach to become coach at Norwalk High School, Ocean View Athletic Director Tim Mennealy said. Eggers was 16-16 in three seasons at Ocean View.

SOCCER

The Southern California Seahorses soccer team won their third consecutive game, beating San Gabriel Valley, 6-0, Friday night at Fullerton High.

Midfielder Beau Lawson scored two goals and added an assist in a five-goal second half by the Seahorses (3-2-0). Jordan Jones broke open the game with a goal in the 50th minute to put the Seahorses ahead, 2-0.

* The Mission Viejo-based West Coast Futbol Club’s Blue team recently defeated Bakersfield Alliance, 2-1, for the CYSA-South 2001 National Cup U-18 championship.

Coached by Luis Balboa, WCFC Blue will represent the Cal-South region in the Far West Regionals next month in Albuquerque, where it will compete against the top teams from 13 Western states.

TRACK AND FIELD

Distance runners Nick Arciniaga of Fountain Valley High and Daniel Cobian of Antelope Valley College have signed to compete for Cal State Fullerton.

Arciniaga has run 4:18.67 in the 1,600 meters and 1:56.44 in the 800. Cobian was the 2000 Foothill Conference cross-country champion and won conference titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters this track season.

Hurdler Kelly Thomson of Santa Cruz Soquel High has signed to compete for the women’s team.
