Indian forces in Kashmir killed at least 25 suspected Islamic militants who tried to cross over to Pakistan, the Indian army said.
The fighting came after security forces intercepted messages suggesting that some militant groups would try to leave Kashmir to join Taliban forces in Afghanistan, Brig. Gen. P.C. Das said.
He said the militants were killed in four gun battles along the line of control in the Poonch district, about 140 miles northwest of Jammu. Pakistani soldiers fired heavily from the other side of the line, trying to give cover to the militants, Das said.
