A San Diego County man was in jail Tuesday facing charges in the first Santa Catalina Island homicide case in 14 years.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said the 25-year-old Coronado man was arrested in the beating and stabbing death of his girlfriend in their hotel room Monday.
Stephen Reitz was being held without bail, pending his arraignment in San Pedro today, after summoning police to the Casa Mariquita, where he and the slain woman, Eva Weinfurtner, 42, also of Coronado, had been staying.
Investigators said that there was evidence of drugs and alcohol in the room and that Weinfurtner was face-down on the floor, with stab wounds in her neck, a dislocated elbow and multiple fractures.
They described the suspect as “emotionally unstable.”
