A grenade attack has wounded 57 people, seven of them seriously, at a market in an impoverished suburb of the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, officials said.
Witnesses said a man late Friday tossed the grenade into a bustling area of the mainly ethnic Hutu suburb of Kinama, scene of fierce fighting earlier this year between Hutu rebels and the Tutsi-dominated army.
“We don’t yet know who is responsible for this cowardly act,” said Iddry Nziragucumura, chief of the Kinama zone. “People say they saw two people coming, throwing the grenade, then fleeing.”
Kinama is on the outskirts of Bujumbura and easily targeted by rebels operating in the hills encircling the city.
