Compressed Schedule for Police Sent to Committee

City Council members skeptical of a proposed compressed work schedule for Los Angeles police officers delayed consideration of the plan Wednesday by sending it to a committee for study.
A day after Mayor James K. Hahn’s proposal was approved by the Police Commission, council members said they were unprepared to have the matter brought up for debate and a possible vote this week.
“It slows it down in a way that gives us an opportunity to make the best decision,” said Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who has said no vote should take place until a consultant completes a study of compressed work schedules on Nov. 10.
Hahn has proposed that officers be allowed to work three 12-hour days or four 10-hour days. He hopes to have the first stations converted to a compressed work schedule by Oct. 20.
