Stern’s Inspiring Music
Re “Isaac Stern, Violinist and Musical Envoy, Dies,” Sept. 23: I recall during the Gulf War, 10 years ago, a televised report that showed Isaac Stern playing on an outdoor stage to a packed audience of brave Israelis, each wearing a gas mask in anticipation of an Iraqi attack. I will never forget the beauty of that violin in its master’s hands, the calm strength of the patrons and Stern’s defiance exhibited through his art. His spirit and courage in that moment of uncertainty can inspire this country today.
