It’s Time for Angels to Step Up to Mike

Once again the Angels begin their season full of optimism and with a renewal of purpose. But their play reflects the usual downside milestones: Tim Salmon’s slow start, opponents scoring first, atrocious hitting, a DH missing in action--need I continue?

Manager Mike Scioscia portrays his calm demeanor and advises of the long season ahead. Advice to Scioscia: “Start to panic--Now!!”

After reading Wednesday’s article, it seems that soon the Angels will be calling for Manager Mike Scioscia’s head on a plate and, unfortunately for the fans and future of the team, Disney is dumb enough to do this. Mike Scioscia is a good manager and it would be too bad if he had to prove that with another team.

His analysis of Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss to the Mariners was exactly right and shows that he wasn’t outmanaged as much as the Angels were outplayed. There are two problems (at least): the hitting and specifically the very large absence of Tim Salmon and Darin Erstad and the fact that the Angels are stuck behind two of the very best teams in all the majors, the Mariners and the Athletics. Scioscia is right not to panic but to stay the course. I hope Disney can show the same wisdom.
