‘Corpse Flower’ Looks Ready to, Ugh, Bloom

Officials at the Huntington Library say they expect the Amorphophallus titanum--known as the “corpse flower” or “stinky plant” for its pungency--to bloom as early as this weekend.
It would be the 12th time the flower has bloomed in North America, the second time in California. Three years ago, when the Huntington’s flower bloomed, the 6-foot stinker drew 76,000 visitors. The odor is attractive only to pollinating insects.
On Saturday, the flower was 4 feet 5, an inch taller than the day before. An outer layer was loosening, and a slight odor indicated that the bloom, expected to last two days, may start today.
