Julie Foudy beat U.S. World Cup teammate Briana Scurry on a header in the 46th minute as San Diego won, 1-0, Wednesday in a Women’s United Soccer Assn. game at Atlanta before 5,814.
Carly Smolak made four saves for her second shutout for San Diego (5-11-4).
Atlanta (10-8-1), which needed a victory to clinch the final playoff spot, lost its second consecutive game. Sun Wen and Homare Sawa each had shots hit the crossbar for Atlanta.
Philadelphia 1, San Jose 1--Stacey Tullock scored in the 73rd minute to give the Charge a tie with the CyberRays at Villanova, Pa., in front of 6,452.
Brandi Chastain had a first-half goal for San Jose (8-7-5), two points behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot.
Melissa Moore had six saves for Philadelphia (11-3-6), tied for first place with Carolina.
Carolina 2, New York 1--Birgit Prinz and Danielle Fotopoulos scored second-half goals in the Courage’s victory at Uniondale, N.Y.
Carolina (12-5-3) secured home-field advantage for the playoff semifinals. Tiffeny Milbrett scored for New York (3-16-1).
