Late Goals Lift Burn Over Fire

Jason Kreis scored the tiebreaking goal in the 89th minute, and Ronnie O’Brien scored a goal a minute later as the Dallas Burn beat the Chicago Fire, 3-1, Saturday in front of 10,506 at Dallas.

The Burn (9-5-7) ended Zach Thornton’s 262-minute shutout streak and beat the Fire (8-9-4) for the sixth consecutive game.

Dallas’ Oscar Pareja scored his first goal of the season 25 minutes in with a 25-yard shot from just in front of the goal.

Chicago’s Hristo Stoitchkov tied it with a 25-yard shot from the left side of the goal in the 64th minute.

Washington 0, Kansas City 0--Wizard goalkeeper Tony Meola stopped a retaken penalty kick by Marco Etcheverry in the 90th minute to extend D.C. United’s scoreless streak to 531 minutes in front of 14,630 at Washington.

D.C. United (6-11-4) has not scored a goal since Bobby Convey scored in the 39th minute against the Columbus Crew on July 13.

On Etcheverry’s penalty kick, referee Noel Kenny ruled that Convey was in the box early. Etcheverry was forced to retake the kick, and Meola made the save.

Kansas City (8-6-8) is unbeaten in three games.

Colorado 2, Columbus 1--Chris Henderson and Chris Carrieri each had a goal and an assist as the Rapids (10-9-3) defeated the Crew (8-10-4) in front of 13,252 at Denver.

Carrieri scored his ninth goal of the season in the 57th minute. Henderson’s goal, his 10th, came in the 64th minute.
