From Times Staff and Wire Reports
For the third time in a year, all but one of the California Highway Patrol’s 14 Cessna 206 airplanes have been grounded because of a chronic engine malfunction.
The planes, which were bought last year, were grounded Friday and their engines sent to the manufacturer for repair of the crankshafts. CHP Commissioner D.O. “Spike” Helmick said they should return to duty within days.
A year ago, the engines of two planes abruptly died in flight. Metal shavings were found in the crankshaft of a third. No one was hurt in any of the incidents.
