State Budget: It’s Us
Although I’m no fan of Gov. Gray Davis, blaming him for the budget crisis is not entirely fair. Why do those in the electorate get a pass, who mostly vote overwhelmingly Democrat? Democrats like big government, but in economic downturns revenues decline while spending goes up automatically, with resulting deficits.
A Dec. 22 letter writer suggested the state file for bankruptcy so bondholders would not get a “free ride” in the budget debacle. Well, gee, didn’t the voters just pass several propositions authorizing new bond issues for upward of $20 billion? It’s Christmas, and no, Virginia, there still isn’t a Santa Claus.
