Forum Plays Second Fiddle to N.Y. Wedding

NEW YORK — Love got in the way Saturday night, forcing a large contingent of police to escort the high-profile delegates of the World Economic Forum from the midtown Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan for a gala dinner.
Organizers of the forum, which moved from Davos, Switzerland, to New York in a post-Sept. 11 show of support for the city, planned to hold the dinner in the hotel’s grand ballroom. But when they tried to book it last fall, a happy couple already had it reserved for their wedding.
“We asked would it be any chance possible for them to consider moving it to a different date. They said no,” said Charles McLean, a spokesman for the conference.
The forum then scrambled to find a substitute site, and the stock exchange was happy to oblige.
“I don’t know who they are, but I wish them well,” McLean said of the bride and groom.
