The family of the first U.S. servicewoman killed in the conflict in Afghanistan returned from her funeral to find their home in Gary had been burglarized.
“We left the grave site and I had to make a pit stop at the house to pick up a car when we noticed the door was kicked in,” said Marine Sgt. Matthew Winters, brother of Marine Sgt. Jeannette L. Winters.
Jeannette L. Winters, 25, was among seven Marines killed Jan. 9 when a KC-130 tanker plane crashed in Pakistan. She was the first female U.S. Marine ever to die in a combat zone.
The break-in apparently occurred during her funeral Friday.
