Courtney Love Receives Court OK to Pursue Labor Claim

The California Court of Appeal on Monday allowed singer Courtney Love to proceed with her legal challenge to a California labor code amendment as part of her lawsuit against Vivendi-owned Universal Music Group.
In December 1999, Love decided to stop recording music for Universal. Last year, Universal sued Love, seeking millions of dollars in damages from her for five undelivered albums. Love countersued Universal, accusing the company of “unconscionable” dealings and contending that her recording contract was illegal and excessively long compared with other California labor agreements.
On Monday, the court denied a petition by Universal to remove from Love’s suit a challenge that focuses on a California labor code amendment that essentially keeps recording artists tied to contracts longer than other workers.
Love’s breach-of-contract suit in Los Angeles Superior Court is scheduled to go to trial in June.
