Sprint to Cut 1,200 Jobs, Trim DSL Platforms

Sprint Corp. said it will cut about 1,200 positions and eliminate high-speed Internet platforms in some cities to cut costs amid the telecom industry slowdown.
The job cuts and other operating-cost measures are not expected to have a significant effect on 2002 financial results and cash requirements, Sprint said.
The company said it will decommission, through the long-distance group only, the DSL, or digital subscriber line, platform in cities where Sprint has found a better way to deliver high-speed Internet service or where the high costs make it difficult to continue service.
Sprint’s stock closed up 47 cents, or 4.2%, at $11.77 on the New York Stock Exchange.
