Board OKs Jail, Fine for Watching Street Races

People who watch illegal street races could be slapped with a $500 fine under a motion approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
“Illegal street racing is a dangerous, reckless activity that threatens the lives of our young people. This ordinance will decrease the number of spectators at these events and help reduce street racing overall,” said county Supervisor Mike Antonovich.
Violation of the ordinance will constitute a misdemeanor. In addition to a fine, spectators at races face jail terms of up to six months.
“There have been numerous deaths over the years connected to illegal street racing,” said Tony Bell, an Antonovich aide. “Hopefully, this helps remove one of the incentives for having street races.”
