A Long Beach mother suspected of killing her 15-month-old daughter and then trying to kill herself was charged Friday with murder and assault, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Angelica Maria Sanford, 28, and daughter Isabella were found unconscious Tuesday in their home on East 15th Street by the child’s father when he returned home from work, police said.
The child was taken to St. Mary Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The county coroner’s office had not announced a cause of death by Friday.
Sanford, who was treated for a slashed wrist and an apparent drug overdose, was transferred Friday to the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center. The district attorney’s office is seeking bail of $1 million. An arraignment date has not been set.
If convicted, Sanford could be sentenced to life in prison.
