Seal Beach Filling Its Council

Voters in Seal Beach’s Old Town area will go to the polls today to elect a new council member.
Candidates in the runoff election are businesswoman Beverly Pearce and Charles Antos, a county planner. The winner will replace Shawn Boyd, who lost in the March election.
Election issues include the city’s utility users tax, the availability of low-income housing and the future of 10 acres owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The DWP property, vacant for more than 30 years, has been zoned for seven acres of open space and a hotel on the remaining three acres.
A four-story hotel was originally proposed but was scaled down to 150 rooms in three stories. There are no current plans to build the hotel. There is also concern that the site may be contaminated with asbestos.
The city has an 11% utility users tax. There has been discussion about lowering the tax, eliminating it or or letting voters decide.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
