Peace Center

I am disappointed in your May 21 editorial, “Tom Rows the Boat Ashore,” regarding the proposed Center for the Development of Peace and Well-Being at UC Berkeley. Peacemaking is not about the absence of conflict but its resolution by nonviolent means. The evidence of current events at all levels is that we Americans have very little knowledge of how to go about such resolution.
One primary contributor to the culture of violence epidemic around us is an attitude of mockery whenever people, ideas and institutions devote themselves to foundational human values. I regret that The Times has lowered its editorial page to that standard.
