Emergency Training School to Reduce Staff

The California Specialized Training Institute at Camp San Luis Obispo, a key emergency services training school for first-responders to terrorist attacks and earthquakes, is facing cutbacks.
The institute is losing a quarter of its staff in efforts to reduce the state’s $35-billion budget shortfall. The school employs 40 people, and 10 will have to be laid off to cut $350,000 from its $4-million budget, Director Eileen Baumgardner said.
The number of courses offered at the institute will be reduced. The school offers 220 courses a year, but it was unclear how many would be lost.
