Foie Gras Controversy

Re “Foie Gras Flap Leads to Vandalism,” Aug. 25: I doubt that Cem Akin, a researcher with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the anti-foie gras “terrorists” [in Sonoma, Marin and Napa counties] have witnessed the gavage of geese or ducks -- the process by which foie gras is produced.
I don’t pretend to be able to read a duck’s mind, but they show no obvious signs of fear before or distress after feeding. When brought into the pen they push to be first in line.
On the other hand, I’ve worked with shearing gangs and witnessed the fear, distress and minor injury of hundreds of sheep. I hope Akin doesn’t wear wool. I do, and I also eat foie gras.
