Ex-Yugoslav Officer Is Sent to The Hague

A former Yugoslav National Army colonel wanted in connection with one of the most notorious crimes of Croatia’s 1991-95 independence war was transferred to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Tribunal spokesman Jim Landale said Veselin Sljivancanin arrived in the Netherlands late Tuesday, where he will stand trial on charges connected to the mass killing of 200 people near the Croatian town of Vukovar in 1991.
Police officials in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, were not available to give details about the transfer and Sljivancanin’s lawyers said they and his family were unaware that he had been sent to The Hague. Sljivancanin was arrested in June in Belgrade after a 10-hour standoff.
