Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Vinnell unit has been awarded a $48-million contract to train the nucleus of a new Iraqi army over the coming 12 months, beating out four other bidders, the Defense Department said.
Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, former commander of the U.S. Infantry Center at Ft. Benning, Ga., will oversee the training, said Walter Slocombe, an advisor to the U.S.-led occupation authority. He said the plan is to have a 12,000-strong light-infantry division up and running in a year.
