Freeway Stays Open Despite Fuel Line Leak

More than 1,000 gallons of gasoline spilled onto a winding canyon road near the San Diego Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass Saturday morning after construction crews accidentally ruptured a fuel line, authorities said.

A section of Sepulveda Boulevard near the Skirball Cultural Center was closed while authorities cleaned up the gasoline, said Officer Brian Joy of the California Highway Patrol. The freeway remained open, but crews were monitoring the effect of fumes on passing traffic, Joy said.

The pipeline was ruptured shortly after 8:30 a.m. by workers drilling in the hilly area. Gasoline from a Shell Oil fuel line spewed from across the street and into a storm drain, Joy said.
