Supervisors appropriated more than $9 million for hiring firefighters, buying fire equipment and building a fire station in Baker.
Included in the allocation is $2.7 million for expansion of the Needles fire station and a portion of new stations in Phelan and Spring Valley Lake, plus supplies.
A $3.5-million portion will allow the county to hire 14 fire captains, 12 firefighter-paramedics and six engineer-paramedics for stations in remote mountain and desert areas.
And a $3-million contract will fund construction of the Baker fire station over the next two years.
