Keeping the peace (and the quiet)

Huzzah for Officer Tom Wall of Laguna Beach for his lonely vigil against loud motorcycle pipes (Dec. 18).
As a rider for 28 years, it is good to see municipalities finally doing something about those who tarnish the image of all motorcyclists. And I’m so sorry this crusade for lawful silence is hurting some merchants in the wallet, but I do not see them trying to quiet their customers. Now, does Wall direct his decibel meter toward the cars that have been transformed into boom boxes, rattling bass beats through my (full-face) helmet?

A police officer such as Wall is a rare breed, sorely absent in so many California cities. Newport Beach should take note, for on Pacific Coast Highway every weekend, especially the Restaurant Row stretch, you’ll have a hard time completing a sentence amid all the noise and exhaust created by these self-entitled, attention-seeking, aging juveniles revving their noisy toys. If the noise generated by these choppers were coming from a home or building, its occupants would be cited.
Thank you, Officer Wall. Keep up your good work.
