The article “Peak Condition” [July 5] makes hiking up Mt. Whitney sound like climbing Mt. Rainier or even Mt. Shasta. My son and I summitted on his 11th birthday. No pitons, no ropes, no crampons, just a pair of good boots, a day pack, water bottles, snacks, layered clothing and an emergency kit.
