Matsui Wins Late Husband’s Seat

Sounding themes familiar from her late husband’s 14 campaigns, Doris Matsui handily won a special election to fill his term and will become the newest member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
With her win in a 12-candidate field, Matsui, a lobbyist and former Clinton White House official, completed what her television ads called a “uniquely Sacramento story.” She succeeds her husband, the late Democratic U.S. Rep. Robert Matsui, 63, who died Jan. 1 of complications from a rare bone marrow disease. He was reelected in November.
“It feels bittersweet, but my heart is full of hope and promise,” said Matsui, 60, a Democrat, who will represent the Sacramento area’s 5th Congressional District.
Matsui collected 69% of the vote in Tuesday’s election.
She is expected to be sworn in today.
