‘Lord of the Rings’ now sings

It took three long movies to tell the tale of “The Lord of the Rings,” but one three-hour stage musical will tell the same story.
“The Lord of the Rings” will open in Toronto on March 23, 2006, with an ensemble of 65 actors and musicians and a budget estimated at $22.4 million. An earlier plan to open the show in London this year was changed because of the difficulty of finding an available theater of the right size.
Shaun McKenna brought his adaptation to producer Kevin Wallace, who obtained the stage rights to the story in 2003. Matthew Warchus, who is probably best known for the much smaller-scaled plays of Yasmina Reza (“Art”), will direct and receive co-adapting credit with McKenna. The score is by Indian composer A.R. Rahman (“Bombay Dreams”), the Finnish group Varttina and Christopher Nightingale.
Mirvish Theatre subscribers will have exclusive access to tickets until May 15, 2005.
