Panel OKs Report on Fast Rail Line

The California High Speed Rail Authority on Wednesday approved an environmental impact report for a proposed 700-mile high-speed rail system that would whisk travelers from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just over 2 1/2 hours.
Voters will be asked next year to approve a $9-billion bond measure to begin construction on a portion of the system, which has a total projected cost of $32 billion to $37 billion.
Earlier this year, the rail authority gave tentative approval to a planned route. The proposed system would serve San Diego, Los Angeles, the Central Valley, Sacramento and San Francisco. The rail authority board met Wednesday in Sacramento.
