Mars, down to earth
California Oil Museum will host the national traveling exhibit “Destination Mars,” highlighting the triumphant explorations of the Red Planet over the last decade. Developed by the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., interactive displays and stations for all ages offer a portal to understanding what scientists have learned about Mars during the recent rover missions, including its weather, gravity and geology. Visitors can take command of a Mars rover via computer simulation, study a Mars meteorite under a microscope, don 3-D glasses for a virtual walk on Mars in a three-dimensional photography exhibit and experience simulated volcanic activity.
“Destination Mars,” California Oil Museum, 1001 E. Main St., Santa Paula. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Ends Feb. 19.
* Preview: 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Includes telescope viewing of Mars and other celestial bodies.
* Opening reception with guest speakers, 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
