Typhoon Kills at Least Nine on Hainan Island

Typhoon Damrey hit China’s southern island of Hainan, killing at least nine people, collapsing houses and sweeping away rice, rubber and banana crops.
China’s Civil Affairs Ministry said almost 4 million people on Hainan and 1.8 million in neighboring Guangdong province suffered property damage.
With winds up to 125 mph, Damrey was the island’s strongest typhoon since 1973.
