What to conclude about ‘dirty wars’

Re “Why good countries fight dirty wars,” Current, July 30
Caleb Carr does not specifically say it, but any reasonable reader would conclude from his article that the answer to why so-called good countries fight dirty wars is because they are morally equivalent to those they fight -- despite all of their high-toned moralistic propaganda.

Carr’s praise of Oliver Cromwell’s behavior is outrageous. Cromwell’s atrocious behavior in Ireland contradicts any good he may have done during the English civil war. At Drogheda in 1649, he massacred the civilian population. If Carr teaches his students that Cromwell’s New Model Army was an example of a good military unit, God help us if his students at Bard College ever become our leaders.
