Note to bumpee: Get it in writing

REGARDING “Bumped? It’s a Pain in the Neck, So Get Something for It,” [Travel Insider, July 30]: An important admonition left out of your strategy is that the aggrieved “bumpee” should never display anger or belligerence.
The poor sap the bumpee will be dealing with is never the guilty party in a bumping situation and seldom is willing to work with belligerent or demanding people. Assertive people? Yes. Reasonable people? Yes.
More important: Escalation of a problem to higher authorities is always possible when the front-line person is not responsive, especially in late-night situations where the front line may claim he can’t do it.
Finally, the bumpee must always make contemporaneous notes, especially of names, times and promises made. Never underestimate the intuitive intimidation note-taking creates, especially when one makes sure the name is properly spelled.
